Finished the Sporting Life 10K yesterday in 1:05:28. Pretty good. I was hoping to get it done in under 60 miutes but sicne the weather has been so friggin' cold lately I have not been able to train as much as I needed to get to that goal. In any case I'm very happy with my results and now that it's done I plan on registering for a few more races over the summer.
The only downside to yesterdays' run was it was SO SOOOO very cold. My legs were blue and my feet/toes were so cramping that even today I'm limping and stiff. Couldn't take the stairs today like I normally do as my muscles just won't work that way today.. but honestly it's an awesome feeling!!!
and to top it off I raised almost $150 for Camp Ooch thanks to the generousity of my friends and family!!!

depression
every year since having kids I find this time of year very depressing. I am not sure exactly why, the weather is beautiful, the sun is shining and spring has sprung but I start to feel like a prisoner in my own life. My kids go to bed fairly early and often it is still light outside, I am then stuck inside with nothing to do but watch TV or clean the house...same old stuff I do in the winter. I never get the chance to enjoy the beautiful weather and sometimes start to feel resentful. I miss my old life, when i could go sit on a patio and have a drink or two with friends, take walks in the evenings with my hubby or even friends.
I have told hubby that I feel this way and he wasn't taking me seriously at first but he realized that this is actually an issue for me and we are going to work on ways to fix it,. Won't be easy as my kids need their sleep, but maybe taking them to the park after dinner for a bit and getting out of the house into the sunshine will ease my upset about this issue!

Sunny Spring Styles
Seems like patterned and printed pants are all the rage this spring. Every store I go into has them on display. They look nice but I'm not sure I'll be buying into the trend, unless I find a pair I really like, at a super steal. I like to wear my jeans/pants for years and years and don't anyone to think that they are "so last year" next summer!!
Will you buying into this summers trend with patterned pants???

Who knew,,, how great turning 40 would be!!!
I was dreading turning 40. I always pictured 40 year old women as old and going down hill... but really this has not been the case at all. First of all, I think I look great for my age. People are always surprised when my age comes up. I do take decent care of my skin and hardly ever take sun so I think that helps a lot.
I also try to exercise, not as regularly as I'd like but often enough that I'm not horribly over weight. I have been running recently and find that the more I exercise the better I look and especially feel.
My birthday was celebrated with style. On the actual night I went out to dinner with my closest friends. It was really nice!! I realized that I've been friends with some of these ladies for upwards of 30 years!!! The restaurant itself was ... eh. Food could have been better and it was a bit over priced but the company and conversation well made up for that!
My husband got me the exact camera I wanted. I have always wanted to take up photography and the pictures I take with my phone camera just don't cut it. Now I can start my new hobby in style! I am really looking forward to creating some awesome photobooks and printing the pics to display in my home!
My mother-in-law surprised me the most. She came over on my birthday and gave the most beautiful bracelet. I usually receive cash from her and was so touched that she actually took the time to pick something out for me. I had absolutely no idea how popular this style is! After receiving this I have started noticing it everywhere. (as a side note- went to a book club meeting on Sunday and noticed 4 other woman wearing the exact same Tiffany bracelet- how weird is that- I'd never seen it before and suddenly it's everywhere!!)
My parents watched the kids so hubby and I could go away for the weekend. It was the very first time we were able to get away without the kids and it meant so much to both of us. It was an amazing time- even with having to go to the doctor in Niagara Falls due to feeling really sick on Saturday morning! They also surprised me with a beautiful pair of earrings and pendant from one of my fave jewelers.
All in it was one of the best birthdays ever!!! I love my family and friends for making it so special for me.

his versus hers...
My hubby is wonderful. He tries so hard to help me out around the house, he does the dishes-puts them away (often in the wrong spots-but he does them) He folds his own laundry and will put it away in his dresser- but there is no rhyme or reason to his dresser and I can't tell where things are supposed to go- socks mixed with t-shirts, mixed with underwear etc... I have on many occasions organized his dresser with many thanks and promises of keeping it organized but after a few days it is usually chaos again.. I'm not sure why i keep trying or why it matters- but it does to me so i keep trying!
One thing that drives me absolutely batty is when the bed isn't made right. I have showed hubby in many occassions the way a bed with a foot board is supposed to be made. I have given him step by step instructions but over and over again it is made wrong... again not sure why it matters so much but it just does so i would really LOVE it if he made it right...
Can you spot the differences in his versus the right way???

excellent excel
A few months ago I went for teeth whitening. The procedure was horribly uncomfortable and I honestly didn't see the results I would have expected. I figured I would need to invest in more expensive whitening treatments or just give up hope of having pearly white teeth. Until recently. I bought a four pack of excel white gum...and I've been chewing it religiously now (meaning at least 6 pieces a day) for the past week and I actually started to notice amazing results. I'm positive the gum is making my teeth whiter than the 40 minutes sitting in a room with my teeth immersed in a concentrated hydrogen peroxide solution that burned my gums and made me drool uncontrollably!!
I will continue to chew the gum for another week or more to see if it is really the gum or just wishful thinking!!

yeah for yoga!!!
I had been wanting to get into yoga for a really long time. Both my Chiropractor and FP recommended it to me. I was just hesitant to go for several reasons...most of which were really unfounded. Anyway today FP suggested I come with her to a free class at our local Lululemon store. It was just what I needed. I really felt that I took some valuable lessons home with me from the class. Most of which is more to do with my personal life than physical fitness. The instructor was talking about finding your here and now and trying to let go of all the external factors in ones life to get a true practice. I really want to take that into my daily life and try not to focus on all the insignificant things I can't control. So along with a great stretch and relaxation from yoga I also felt that I took away some important life lessons as well.
I do plan to continue to practice with this class weekly!

A few challenges
As part of my annual "New Year, New Me" resolutions I have decided to join a grain free challenge. I was skeptical at first as I usually start my day off with 1/3 cup of bran buds mixed with greek yogurt and fruit...i was okay today without it but of course I wasn't working and was distracted by friends and family at home. I think the challenge might pose a little harder than I initially thought. For lunch today I served a baked mac and cheese (pre packaged as our friends are orthodox and strictly Kosher-which we are not) as well as lots of cut vegetables with hummos. Luckily for the me the mac and cheese was pretty disgusting (i even noticed one of our guests gagging on it- they later told me they normally get a different brand if they buy that sort of food). For dinner I replaced the taco shells with lettuce as was suggested. It was pretty good- and I don't feel overly stuffed! I was able to eat four of them without the horrible guilt i would feel if i ate four tortilla shells! I wasn't tempted by the chocolate cake I baked with my girl this evening. It looked okay but even though it was a low fat, parve cake when I calculated the points value from Weight Watchers I was still a whopping 6 points. No thanks!!!
Other resolutions include things like get back on the working out regularly track. I signed up for a 10k in May and hope to get to the finish line in under 60 minutes... need to work towards that goal!
and finally of course there is the patience with my kids resolution...they can drive me batty at times but i vow to try and keep my cool, not let them rattle me and to keep screaming to a minimum..that is a really hard one for me and I did break it today already but will keep trying to work on it. Really that is the most important one IMO!!

2 weeks to healthy
i have been on a mission recently...it is 2 weeks to healthier hair. after a recent visit to the salon i realized just how damaged my hair was due to the daily use of my beloved flat iron. i have vowed to minimize it's use and let my hair get healthy again. i have also started using an amazing- but quite pricey shampoo/conditioner. Morrocan Oil. it is amazing so far. i only have to wash my hair every 3 days and use such a small amount on each wash that the price kind of works itself out. i have limited my flat iron use to just the front of my hair and lowered the heat to med instead of super hot....we;ll see how this goes!

Two Good Causes
I recently found out an old boyfriend's daughter has Leukemia. She is only 5 years old and happened to be in my son's class this year. When I found out I was so sad and upset at first but have since come to think that there is something- even the tiniest thing- i can do to help. I decided to register for the Sporting Life 10K Run for kids with Cancer. This not only helps raise funds for a great cause but also gives me the motivation to run and get fit before May 12th. One month after turning the dreaded 40... OMG!!!
Anyone want to come with me???

starting small
since my November challenge fell curbside pretty early on in the month I decided to start smaller this time. I have challenged myself to do either the Wii fit Zumba or the elliptical for a minimun of 20 minutes every second day. This is more attainable than a full on workout every day! So far so good. I started on Friday and did a beginner zumba class. i was sweating regardless of the "beginner" label on the class. Managed to fit in another 20 minute zumba today. What i have learned when I fall off the horse is the only way to get back on again is just to go for it. No time to hesitate and dwell on failure! life is too short for that.

personal challenge...fail
November 1st I vowed to get back into my daily exercise routine. I go through spouts of exercising regularly and always feel great when I do but then things get hectic and I fall out of the habit... I last 3 days this time. Today i've had hours at home alone when I could get off my ass and exercise. It is a glorious day out, i could even go for a run but something in my head is holding me back. Wish i knew what it was or how to get rid of that blockage but it is still there. At least i've been doing alright in the food tracking so what i lack in exercise i make up for in healthier eating... but there are some days when that is just kicked curbside too!!!

changes
my very first attempt at colouring my own hair. not really much different but the condition of my hair seems quite healthy. It is darker than i'd hoped and I will probably get highlights to soften it up...but nobody has even noticed yet I guess it really isn't different at all!

Nobody ever said it was easy...
Parenting is one of the hardest jobs out there. It is definitely harder than my day job, harder than university and harder than almost anything else i've ever done. I now understand the rational for choosing to have only one child or spacing out kids by several years. I honestly didn't even think about how a baby would affect the balance in the house! When we decided to have #2 we were only a few days away from celebrating #1's first birthday. He wasn't even walking yet! But we were so happy being parents to our perfect little boy we wanted another one, just like him!! Our decision went something like this:
"Honey, i love how cute and cuddly baby is, He is such a good boy, I want another, just like him"
"hun, i'm not getting any younger, i don't want a baby at 40... we better have another one soon!! "
"honey, I keep forgetting to take my birth control, do you suppose that is a sign we should start working on our second" His response to each... ok!!
Three months later we were expecting #2!!
No thought to how another baby would affect us financially, emotionally or physically. I always knew that I wanted more than one baby but as I wasn't blessed with starting a family at a young age so I had to make due with the hand i was dealt. Since I would never have had a baby without being married first. And i didn't get married until 31.. That meant having my first baby at 33 and a second at 35. My mom was 29 when i was born and and 31 when my brother came along, i always felt that she was the "older" mom in the bunch. How times have changed!!!
Anyway, i wouldn't change the way things have turned out but there are times when I wish I could just step out of my life for a short time, just to catch my breath and remember how lucky I really am!!!

SOOO
it has been a long while since my last post...can't believe how the time escapes me!
Anyway in reference to my last post- I did end up finding to bikinis that I love. YES I said BIKINIS!!! both very flattering on top and not too bad on the bottom either! I wore them with great confidence...until one broke...yup just broke- mid wear. My brand new $90 bikini broke. the plastic which closes the top just snapped into two. Luckily the store sent it for repair and it was ready for wear again in 2 short weeks. They have amazing customer service there and I recommend anyone looking for a bra style bikini check out Legs Plus on Leslie!

Still Searching
My son was diagnosed with Idiopathic Scoliosis in July of 2011. He has been wearing a Boston Brace for about 14 months now. At first he was fairly compliant and wore the brace with no debate or argument. As time goes on and he notices that nobody else he knows wears a brace he is becoming more defiant and less willing to wear it regularly. This is becoming a big problem for us as we are fully aware of the damaging effects non-compliance can have on his health long -term. This is very frightening for us knowing that what makes him happy now can seriously effect him negatively later on. I have nightmares when I think about him wearing the brace until he is 12 or 12. Another 6 or 7 years.
The problem is we have been searching for over a year now for a support group where he can meet other kids who suffer from Scoliosis and must wear a brace. We live the biggest city in Canada and there are absolutely no such groups around. There was one website with forums for both kids and parents dealing with Scoliosis available but that was recently disabled for reasons unknown to us. The closest group we have come across is in Ottawa...very useful. I have emailed numerous individuals from websites and even contacted the Scoliosis clinic at Sick Kids (where he receives most of his care) they have NOTHING for us. The only advise they had for us is to take him to a psychologist. JUST LOVELY. and so wrong on so many levels. If he had some other issue I'm sure he would have the option of a support group to vent his frustrations and gain understanding from other kids of how to cope but with Scoliosis he is treated like a pariah. The child has no outlet for his thoughts and feelings on dealing with being the only kid in his whole school with a brace other than speaking with his parents and teachers. It really isn't fair and we seriously need to fix this hole in the system.

Updates
So it's been a while!!!
Our summer was amazing. We had a fantastic holiday in Cuba and would recommend our resort to anyone looking for an affordable, fun, beach holiday. I rocked my new bikinis and was so happy to have bought them instead of the conservative, ridiculous one piece or tankinis sported by most women my age. Only unfortunate incident is the top on one of them broke the second day...lucky though I actually liked the other one more and have since had the broken one fixed at the store I purchased it from. (a shout out to the anon reader who suggested I go to Legs Plus-they are awesome there!!)
Also had a big issue with the camera and only got about 93 pics out of about 300 snapped. The issue with digital cameras is the memory cards can get viruses and the pics aren't always recoverable...so no nice scrap book from this holiday but there will be lots of holidays in the future and I'll be sure to take pics then!
I've been running a lot these days. Completed this 10k with FancyPansy. It was great!! I didn't have the best time but I made it and that counts for a lot in my books!!
Now I am concentrating on reducing my time and finishing my next 10k in less than an hour. I have been working up to running on my own for a full 10, Something about running in a race that makes it easier to get to the end...when i'm running solo I seem to need a bit more of a push and normally get to 7k with no problem but am completely done so I normally just make it home!!
Getting the kids ready for school. My big boy is starting first grade and he is super nervous. I know he will shine bright and do amazingly but as I was at his age, he is quite worried about the whole thing!

the search begins
We are finally heading on a proper vacation. I am super duper excited, as is the whole family. The only thing I dread about vacation is the need for bathing suits. I have several- none of which fit me well. The last time we went on vacation I was forced to purchase two tankinis from a beach side store in Grand Cayman Islands since my suitcase with all my swim wear never showed up. I got 2 pretty ones but they really don't fit me that well.I got back my suit case eventually and realized at that point my honeymoon bikinis were no longer appropriate- string bikinis surely should remain on the 20 something set of boobies! The tops on my new tankinis are really unflattering and I would prefer either bikinis or one piece- sexish not utility ones though. I have been glancing at Bikini Village and Bikini Bay but have a feeling I am NOT going to find anything beach worthy at either of those stores... plus the girls who work there are so young, they are not going to be helpful in finding the right, flattering fit... so the search begins!
I cannot find ONE pic of anything I would possibly consider wearing...

wheat weirdness
I have never really been an allergy sufferer of any sort. The occassional sniffle at certain times of the year or a slight reaction to different foods but nothing to worry about. I have never associated bloating or general discomfort directly with what I ate, until today. I haven't had bread or bread products for breakfast in a very long time but today didn't have time for breakfast so I grabbed a bagel at Tim's along with my usual coffee. Boy what a mistake...firstly the points on a bagel are astronomical and definitely do not bode well with a weight watchers life style, secondly the after effects of all that gluten/wheat have been leaving me in a stitch. I have bloated up to twice my normal size within a very short time. My tummy looks like it is carrying child. After taking a digestive enzyme I am starting to feel better but boy what an eye opener!
Even if the bagel says 12 grain...it is probably full of wheat (bad) and definitely loaded with butter (bad)- so even if it is tastey...totally not worth it!!!

Learning to Run
I have been running/jogging a bit more lately and have definitely started learning things about the wonderful sport...
First. when you can't find your sports bra...any old bra just won't do!!! My girls aren't particularly large but definitely do require support and proper support when running is imperative. Now that I've done a 5k in a bouncy bra, i will search until I find my running bra...each and every time!!
Second. I much rather enjoy early morning runs. It is so peaceful outside and way cooler too. I tried running at 3pm last week and almost passed out. I did manage to get in my 5km run but not without a few short walk breaks just to catch my breath. Will try for morning runs whenever I can from now on.
Third. Taking water with me make a huge difference in my performance. I normally don't take water but did today and boy was I happy I did. Half way through my run when I normally would have stopped due to exhaustion I was able to take a few sips of water and just run on. What a revelation I had!!!
Lastly- persistence. For me working through my negative attitude of "I can't do this" and just going for it was not easy but i have learned to just get my shoes on and go for it. No matter how short my run or how hard it is, once I"m done I feel great!!!

just a slight rant...
a person i know has recently lost a crap load of weight. She has been following a strict diet plan and over the course of 5 or 6 months lost what looks to be close to 30 pounds (i'm really just guessing). She looks good but maybe a little too skinny in my opinion...well last time I saw her and her mother, the mother says to me (out of her ear shot) that she thinks her daughter should lose more weight...i was totally shocked and actually disgusted by this comment.
the joys of home ownership
I love owning my own home. It really beats renting, really it does. But since we moved out of our townhouse which was corporated and had services such at lawn mowing and snow removal we have discovered the real joys of home ownership. Anything you need done, you have to do yourself! This past winter I had to shovel snow for the first time in I don't know how many years- we didn't get a lot of snow- thank goodness- but it was a serious workout!
There are lots of "yellow flowers" in the yard...well now what? Before the lawn guy would come, do this and that, and the weeds dissapear now we just look at them with wonder!
We should/need to plant some trees and flowers in the front but i have been procrastinating. I'm not a gardener by nature and it takes so much effort to get down and dig up the earth to plant- ugh!
A New Love Affair
I have never really been a "dress" person. I like dresses for fansy dress but for every day I have always been a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal but lately I have become obsessed with dresses. Suddenly after years and years of not even trying one on I decided to give it a go...well I have fallen in love and have actually become somewhat obsessed!!
I have discovered just how flattering and comfortable they can be. AND an added bonus- just one piece to worry about, no need to find a matching top/pants , no muffin top, just throw it on and go.
The absolute only problem with dresses is playing with the kids while wearing them. It is really hard to get down on the floor and play in a dress- the skirt part rides up and makes it kind of embarrasing for anyone around who might get a peak of my undies!!
This summer I picked up several new summery dresses from Reitmans, Ricki's and RW. They are mostly colorful and great for everyday wear as well as a little dressy if I choose. I have even worn a couple of them with a little shrug which I can take off if need be... also great for wearing them into the fall before the weather gets too chilly for dresses :)
Who knew?!?!

fear factor parenting
it started out innocently enough, I told my son if he didn't brush his teeth after every meal his teeth would fall out. Now he brushes them when he is done his morning milk and when he goes to sleep at night. He is very consciences about it too- if he has a snack after his teeth are brushed he will brush them again before going to sleep for the night. I am proud of this. I think that warning him about the ill affects of his actions is a good way to get him to understand how important it is to brush his teeth (or to eat his vegetables, drink his milk etc...) Some may not agree with this style of parenting. Recently we were critisized for using fear (warnings!!) to get him to listen... we really didn't know a better way- any suggestions?!?!
ism's and tism's
A few sayings or phrases I commonly hear but just can't stand:
See ya- (not "see ya later" but just "see ya") I'm not sure why this one bugs me so much but when I hear someone say it I feel like they are being condescending and sarcastic
Is that so? It is like the person saying it doesn't really believe you or they think what you're saying is insignificant.
You look tired -in other words, you look like sh*t. Thanks! I know I'm tired and don't have much makeup on but do you need to point it out to me!
Youéve lost weight- I just hate when the focus is on my weight. Sure I lost weight about 2 years ago and have managed to keep it off but I have other things in my life besides my weight! Take some time to ask about those things.

Reality!
Since I was pretty much the last of most of my friends to have children I had lots of opportunity to observe and learn about what parenting styles seemed to work and what I would like to use for my own kids. There was so much to learn about sleeping, eating, dressing and general handling of kids. We had friends who had their kids on very rigid routines for sleeping and some who let their kids stay up as late as they wanted, we had some who let them eat and drink as much and whatever they wanted, including one who put Coke in her baby's bottle, and some who didn't stop their kids from eating cookies till the kid puked, there were those who didn't care what their kids wore and those who made sure their kids looked pristine all the time etc...
when I was pregnant with my first baby we went to pre-natal classes where the focus was mainly learning how to breath during labour- and since I knew that I'd be having a c-section I focused more on the other topics like sleeping, feeding and safety.I pretty much knew from the start that I'd breastfeed my baby, even when the time came to actually feed and it turned out to be much much harder than anticipated I followed through with it- mostly because I asked my amazing hubby to go to the store and figure out how much formula would cost compared to the free milk I had! When he came back and said it would likely cost about $300 a month for formula my decision was made. No way was I going to waste hard earned money on that when I could just feed my baby my own milk for free! I actually couldn't believe that people would willingly dry up their milk and pay for formula...but that is me I guess!( always weighing the cost of things!!)
Then came sleeping... I knew the first few months would be hard. Everyone always talked about the late night feedings, the sleepless nights and all that other fun stuff. Even the pediatrician mentioned this to us. We kept the baby in a bassinet in our room for the first 6 weeks- mostly because I'd had a c-section and it was very hard for me to get up to feed the baby, if he was in our room hubby could just quickly get up and bring him to me,and everyone had been telling us that was what we should do. Once he started sleeping through the night (yes he slept through at 6 weeks!!-but that only lasted till about 4 months) he moved into his own crib in his own room. We weren't going to get into the habit of having the baby sleep in our room with us- at that age he had no say and didn't know the difference- and to this day the only time he's slept in our room is when he's been really really sick (and usually gets moved back to his bed while sleeping)
We also noticed that he was very fussy in the late evening. So fussy that it was almost unbearable to hear his little shrill cry for hours at a time- nothing seemed to console him- feeding, rocking, swinging, bouncing... until we just put him in his crib- and he fell asleep! He needed the peace and quiet of his own crib, in his own room to sleep. Thus started our realization that babies needed routine right from the start. Every night we'd have dinner, bathe the baby, I'd nurse him and put him down at around 6:30. He'd sleep for about 12 hours! There were periods of time where he'd wake in the night for feedings, like during teething or growth spurts but generally if we stuck to this routine there was never a problem.
I also started keeping a pretty rigid routine during the days for naps and eating too. This worked beautifully. My baby was happy and I was happy!
As he got older and all the other moms were starting their kids on solids I wanted to wait as long as possible. I had read how feeding solids too early could lead to later stomach problems. I held out until he was 5.5 months! We did the traditional, cereals (rice, then oatmeal, then barley), vegetables (greens first) and then fruits. I made my own baby food and only bought a few jars for convenience. Since I could never get meat mushed up enough I relied on jarred meats which my baby actually loved (blech!!!!) After he turned one and could eat whatever we ate I still wanted him to eat a variety of healthy foods and tried hard to limit his junk intake. We gave him cookies and sweets on occasion but unlike some of my friends who couldn't wait to give their babies chocolate I avoided giving that to him for as long as possible.
I thought I had it all worked out! I'd be the health nut mom who gave the kids home make carrot cake, raisin cookies and zucchini muffins in place of chocolate chip cookies, processed foods and other unhealthy fair! WRONG!!! Once my baby started daycare and I no longer had full control over what he ate, he was introduced to all sorts of less than ideal foods (french fries, chicken fingers, fish sticks etc...) Now that is all he will eat! As he is fast approaching 6 years of age he is getting better at trying things he doesn't recognize.
As for our daughter...she seems to copy him and if he is happy with the meal, she will generally be as well.
As for clothes...I thought I'd have full control of what they wore up until they were tweens WRONG. Both my kids are very fashion aware. They have chosen their own clothes for as long as I can remember and boy does all hell break loose if I dare even suggest they wear something they don't want to... I try to buy stuff that all matches and this year I have a bunch of dresses for my daughter so she won't always look like a colourful clown!

At it again
Had my first run today since last weeks' 5k. It was really really hard. Not sure if I struggled so much because I was exhausted or if the route was just really hilly but I hard time getting it done and did end up walking quite a bit. That's okay though because it is just motivation to try again and get a full 5k run without walking. I plan to register for a 5k run taking place July 1 and want to beat my time from last week so I will definitely have to kick it up a notch and get out there more than the once a week I've been managing lately!!

Katie
I noticed a new store open up at Scarborough Town Centre recently. I was curious about it as the clothes looked kind of cute and likely fairly affordable. Upon entering the store I quickly realized the clothes were definitely made for "thin" people and I also noticed something really strange. All the clothes are one size! I had not experienced anything like it since shopping many moons ago in Korea!! At Katie very few items are sized, which means very few items will look good. I did try on one dress and it was cute and very affordable but decided to pass as it wasn't great quality- as in, I noticed a snag in it at the store. Did manage to pick up a pair of black leggings for $8.
I will go in again once in a while just to see what they have but probably won't buy much!

Run for your life...
I just completed the 5k I had been supposed to be training for this morning. I had been sick a few times over the spring and let my exercise/training lag quite a bit but I still did it and boy am I glad it is done! I am planning on registering for a 10k taking place in Aug and will need to get serious about training for that one.
Today's run I managed to get in at 36.28 minutes time and 34. something chip time. Not really sure of the difference but either way i am D-O-N-E!!! and only a few blisters on the bottoms of my feet to prove it!

Yesterday I litterally had one foot out the door when the phone rang that my son wasn't feeling well and needed to be picked up early from Sunday School. That quashed my running plans but I did hop on the elliptical for 30 minutes once he was nice and comfy in front of the TV (and NOT sick of course-just an over reaction of the teacher) I have discovered that listening to music while exercising is way better than watching TV. Something about watching TV just slows me down and music speeds up my steps a lot! So with Red Hot Chilli Peppers playing nice and loud I probably burned sufficient calories to justify the huge peice of birthday cake I ate later in the day :)

motivation!
Haven't blogging much lately. Haven't really been reading the blogs either. Just feeling like crap all around but today I decided enough was enough and I got out there to run. I just put on my clothes, grabbed my iPod and ran. Did about 3km but that is a start. My goal for now is 5 k so i'm well on my way. I don't think i'm going to die at the 5k race i'm doing on may 27th-which is a good thing! What motivated me is a promise to myself that if I workout (even a little bit) every day for the next 30 days I am treating myself to a Lululemon outfit. Great motivation!!!

getting there
Slowly getting back into working out again after 2 weeks off due to sever strep throat. Working out at all induced major coughing fits and still does a bit if I overdue it.
Yesterday I set a goal of running for 3 km. I started out strong and ran the first 1.5 km no problem, only stopping to tie my shoe. Then I lost my breath and was forced to walk the rest of the way home. At least I just put my sweats on and went! I am very happy with my new earphones. I got the Skull Candy over the ears ones so they no longer fall out of my ears, which really annoyed me!!!
Today I hopped on the elliptical for 20 minutes and watch Zumba videos while doing it. The music for Zumba is awesome but I couldn't make it to my regular class as it was moved to 8:15 am. Although I'm up at that time it's just a tad early for me! Will have to try harder to get there in the future!

366 days...
till I will be fit fabulous and 40!!! That is why on the eve of my 39th (GULP!!!) birthday I decided that cough and all I must get back on the elliptical and push myself just a little. Did 15 minutes and coughed my lungs up most of the way....in fact still coughing uncontrollably but I did it. Phew...now to get at for the next 365 days! My goal is to really be fit, fabulous at 40. No way do i want to let middle age hit me like a tonne of bricks! I let 30 take over my back side and now it is my turn to take control!

Back At IT.
In anticipation of my upcoming 5k run late May I decided I better get off the couch and start moving again. I have been going to Zumba once a week for a while now but realize that is not nearly enough exercise to prep me for the run or in general for that matter. Last night I took out my 30 day Shred DVD and put it on. I had initially planned on following the program for the 30 days it calls for to get full benefits but got side tracked and have been slack about doing it daily... well after completing the level one workout for the 3rd time in total and for the first time in about 3 weeks today I am sore. It is a great feeling and I can't believe I haven't had it for so long! I am really really planning on following it for the next 29 days and will try to report my progress! I hope to also get in a few very short runs as the weather is absolutely stunning! (hope it lasts!!! )

I finally registered for the Toronto Women's 5K run. I am very excited as my BFF will be running the 1/2 that day and I will get to meet her at the finish line to congratulate her in person!!!
Now i have no excuse to be lazy. I have to get practising or I'm gonna be really sorry on race day!!!

Discipline
recently we have been having major behavioural issues with our 3 1/2 year old daughter. She is extremely defiant and disrespectful to us. She acts in ways I wouldn't have dared to until I was a teenager. Her behaviours include things like kicking, hitting and spitting at us, in addition to calling us things like nasty and bad. We always tell her this behaviour is not acceptable and we put her on the naughty step-but this consequence is almost a joke to her. She laughs and runs away from her spot. We are really at a loss and have no idea what else we can do to make her realize this behaviour is not acceptable. We are looking for something to teach her proper behaviour and respect for us and others in general. Someone suggested putting her in martial arts. I am really keen on this idea but also worry this will teach her the skills she needs to further hurt us. Those who have taught martial arts are of course pro to the idea and then there are those who say kids who take martial arts are often the "behaviour" kids. Oh what to do??? Maybe this is just a phase that will end really really soon...let's cross our fingers we all make it through without too many scrapes and bruising.

avoidance
Yesterday was a really hectic day. Had to drag the boy and the man downtown to Sick Kids for a check up which was scheduled for 9:30 and didn't actually happen till after 12. Didn't get home until 4!! and the poor boy was really hoping he'd be going home brace-free but the doctor said absolutely no way!
Anyway that meant I was just so exhausted both physically and emotionally so I decided to veg/flake out rather than workout. Probably would have felt better if I'd worked out but since I did do a 30 minute elliptical workout Monday night one day off was not bad. Tonight will be another challenge with both kids going to lessons but hopefully once they finally get to bed I'll have a chance to pull out the Shred and get to it!!! I really felt my muscles were worked well just with that one workout!!! Daily will certainly make a huge difference!
OH yeah...Happy Valentines Day!!! Although not spent ideally with my one love I did get to spend it with my 2 best guys. Hospital or not it was a day away from work with my 2 favourite guys. After the doctor visit we had a nice lunch out- which was very peaceful sans Little One. Our little one was at daycare and she showed us how much she loves us by throwing her dinner at us Oh well- i know she loves us even if she shows it in strange ways. .... I did get a nice card from hubby and a loving hug from my big boy :)

Day 2
didn't get to the shred but did do 30 minutes of elliptical training. I finally got the kids to bed at 8:30 and was really wanting to catch up on some TV so multitasking while watching and working out was my best choice. I plan on taking the 20 minutes I need to start my 30 day challenge over again tonight.

30 Day Shred. Day 1
Just finished my first workout with fitness guru Jillian Michaels. I decided last week to spend the $10 and purchase her 30 day shred DVD. I'd been hearing how amazing it is for ages and thought, what do I have to lose???
Anyway workout one, day one went rather well. I can't find my hand weights so I did the workout without them but boy did I sweat using just the movements! I will get weights and I'm sure I'll feel the burn even more next time.
Off to a leaner, meaner body...in hopefully those 30 days!!!

Super Powers!!!!
Did you know I possess amazing super powers? I have the unbelievable ability to make myself invisible!! Or at least I think that's what it is.
Saturday afternoon I had the most tortuous task of spending almost 3 hours at Bayview Village. This is one of the most expensive and extravagant malls in the whole city. Most of the cars in the parking lot consist of Jaguars, Lexus SUV's and other luxury vehicles. I figured since I had the time to kill while my car was being detailed I would browse the mall and possibly find something awesome to show off here :)
Well that wasn't going to happen. First store I went to was the GAP. Always pretty good customer service there, although nothing of any substance to note here. Did try on skinny jeans that were sooo skinny I couldn't sit down, move or breath for that matter (maybe a size or two up would have worked but since they were on the clearance rack for $14.99 there were no other sizes!!)
Then I went off in search of some brand names at Honey. Well the two sales girls there were too busy gossiping about the third sales girl having lost her ring in the washroom to even bother with a hello. I have a personal policy that if I don't get at least a hello in the first 5 minutes of being in a store I won't bother giving them my business. Even if they have the most amazing jeans on sale for a really great price ($99.99 for Paige skinny jeans!!!) . Out I walked without so much as an acknowledgement.
My next stop was Mendocino. I never buy anything there. I don't particularly like the clothes or the styles there but thought that since I had so much time to kill I would take a look. Nada! Again not a hello, or even a glance my way. This was getting frustrating and I was beginning to take things personally. Same crappy "service" at Restoration Hardware, and Banana Republic.
At Geox where I was clearly interested in the kids shoes I even made eye contact with the sales guy. He looked at me then walked in the other direction. Good-bye. I'll get the kids shoes at Shoe Warehouse thanks!
Wondering if it was because I was alone and maybe looked like I wasn't buying the sales people didn't bother with me, not sure. I went over to Rogers as I really want to upgrade my phone and was considering getting an iPhone. I was browsing around waiting while the lone sales woman was with another customer. She kind of glanced at me but didn't say hello or perhaps, "I'll be with you in a moment when I am done with this customer" after several minutes waiting around I just left. So long Rogers...i'm off to Bell- and plan on changing over all my services. Period.
Chapters service was great. I found what I wanted, had a nice chat with the cashier as well as the sweet girl giving out samples of tea and cookies. I would expect nothing less of such a large chain store. They didn't grow to their size with lack of service!
So all in all thanks to the lack of customer service at %99 of the stores I visited I saved myself a whole lotta money and learned my a valuable bit about myself. I do possess super powers and am totally invisible!! Thanks Bayview Village!

The Unintentional Vegetarian
This past week we ate all vegetarian meals. There was no real plan to do this but it just worked out that way. I loved it. I feel so clean and lean after eating no meat all week. I'm not sure hubby is happy about it or if he has actually noticed. He hasn't said anything.
I hope to incorporate more vegetarian meals into our weekly rotation but need to do some planning ahead of time to get there.
So here were our dinners for the week..
Monday- vegetable soup with rice. (I did hear a lot of complaints about this meal but as time is an issue on Mondays it was "eat it or go hungry" They chose to go hungry.
Tuesday- spaghetti with tomato sauce (sauce has to be smooth with NO lumps or kids won't eat it!)
Wednesday- over easy eggs on English muffins with cheese for the adults and cereal for the kids ( since we need to get out of the house by 6:10 for lessons-this type of meal will likely have to do for most Wednesdays for the next couple of months!)
Thursday- tofu stir with vermicelli noodles (i finally figured out something to do with those noodles!! I was pleasantly surprised that the kids actually ate them!)
Friday- tonight I'm not sure what we'll be eating but I have a feeling it won't be vegetarian- hubby is responsible for dinner Fridays and this usually involves a roasted chicken from Sobey's (okay not usually- ALWAYS) and some kind of side dish. I also have chicken soup in already made that I'll serve with noodles.
Weekends are never planned ... we'll see what I can come up to continue with the vegetarian trend.
I hope to incorporate more vegetarian meals into our weekly rotation but need to do some planning ahead of time to get there.

oh zumba...
how i love thee!!! I have been doing the Wii Zumba a couple of times a week and I am loving it. The class i went to a couple of times just wasn't cutting it so I have swapped Thursday night Zumba for 30-40 minutes on the elliptical while watching Grey's Anatomy and will start going Saturday mornings to Zumba at Garnet.I have high hopes for this new instructor and hope she lives up my expectations! Time will have to tell!

How do you wear your jeggings?
I recently aquired a pair of GAP jeggings. When I first tried them on I thought there was no way on earth I would ever wear them and planned to give them back to the donor.... but at the last minute I decided to try them on again and actually really really like them. The only problem is I have no idea how to wear them! Obviously I know how to wear pants or even leggings but not how to pull off jeggins. I am really not into wearing leggings as pants with a short top and think it looks inappropriate unflattering most of the time.
How do you wear your jeggings ? (And I'm not talking about skinny jeans-those I have no problem wearing the same way I would wear regular jeans- it's leggings or jeggings specifically I am looking for help with!!)

The Past Week
was pretty good on the eating front. I have been tracking all my intake and have been trying really hard not to eat in front of the TV in the evenings. Except for the fact that I have been on anti-biotics this past week, which tend to cause me stomach upset I have been feeling great about my diet. I have also been trying super hard to exercise more often. I have been hopping on the elliptical for at 30 minutes at a time and earning activity points for that. Thanks to FP and her suggestion of challenging oneself during commercials or for certain time periods, my elliptical workouts have been getting better. I now try to keep my speed to over 13.50 while the commercials are playing and over 11 during the regular shows. This has me breaking a nice sweat, something I hadn't really done before on the elliptical. Also been doing Wii zumba. I absolutely love it!! It is so fun and also a great workout! Once the weather improves I will definitely getting on my running shoes and pounding the pavement once again for evening runs.
Thanks to the convincing FP I will be doing a 5k in May and need to definitely get my game on for this event!!

A typical eating day
At the request of a reader I'll share a typical eating day for me. This is a basic plan with some variations daily.
Breakfast
1/2 cup fat free Greek yogurt
1/3 cup bran buds
1 banana
or
1/2 cup oatmeal made with 1 c skim milk and 3 tablespoons sugar free syrup
banana
coffee with 1/4 c skim milk and 1 sweetener
Lunch
2 cups spinach and arugula
1/2 c pepper (either green or orange)
1/2 c cucumber
1 diced tomato or 10 grape cherry tomatoes
2 tablespoons low fat blue cheese dressing or Italian herb dressing
and either 1/2 avocado or 3 oz diced chicken or 1 can tuna
Snack
I try to control what I snack on during the day. I am supposed to eat 2 servings of low fat dairy a day so I will often eat 2 triangles of Laughing Cow Light cheese or I eat 6 almonds and 6 dried apricot halves.
Dinner
Here is where the most variations occur. I normally just eat what the family eats as I keep my points low during the day. If I am serving pasta than I substitute it with spaghetti squash and if I'm doing a stir fry I make sure to measure out 1/2 cup rice rather than just piling rice on my plate. I also add vegetables in the form of a salad or steamed if the main dish isn't veg based. If I am giving the kids fish sticks I will make real fish for hubby and me. (usually tilapia or another white fish- although salmon is very healthy it is quite high in points)
I also drink a tonne of water. On WW the recommended water consumption is 6 glasses per day. I try to drink between 10-12 cups per day. It works okay for me as I do have a desk job and can run to the WC whenever I need to go! Not really feasable for a lot of people though.

So far So good
Today is day 4 and I have been doing really well keeping up with the "off the couch" plan. Sunday I was a little active by playing Just Dance with the kids. It was actually quite the workout!
Monday and Tuesday I did Zumba on the Wii and really enjoyed it. The class I'm taking now isn't the greatest and the Wii class is actually significantly better than that instructor.
I finally cracked open my Jillian Michaels Wii game and didn't love it but will need to play with it a bit before making a further judgement on whether or not I'll use it. Not sure what I expected but it's not actually Jillian doing a workout, it's more like a cartoon character version of her with her voice dubbed in.
I am definitely going to take up running again. I really do enjoy it but I am definitely going to wait until the weather warms up before getting out there! No need to freeze my petunia off :)
Eating plan has been ok. Keeping to program for the most part but still craving sugar/cookies- will have to wean myself after all the indulgences over the holidays!

New Year, New you...
or really new me! I resolved 2 years ago to lose 30 pounds. I did it. It wasn't easy but through following Weight Watchers, attending meetings and keeping control of my eating I was able to obtain my goal. It took me 6 months to get there. I have kept the weight off for the most part- I am about 3 pounds over my ideal weight. I am now resolving to fit exercise into my lifestyle more regularly as well. I have started recently by joining a zumba class at a local community centre. The class is at a great time for me since it doesn't start till 8:30 and I can go after my kids have gone to bed. Unfortunately that is the only class around that I can find which starts at that time. But I also bought a Jillian Michaels workout for the Wii. I haven't opened it yet but I plan to start that program soon. I also resolve to only watch TV once I have worked out. I plan to no longer make TV my first priority, it should be a secondary priority once the exercise is done- or maybe even a third, after exercise, cleaning the house, then TV!! (but i have to be realistic, no?!!)
I hope that by putting this out there I now have some accountability and will be able to stick to my plan.

shuffle...scramble
I was in a bit of a panic. The dance class I registered dear daughter in was cancelled. I kind of knew this might happen as there were just way too many spaces available when i signed her up. I noticed another class at the same covetted spot but it was full, on to the wait list she went... but then after looking at every community centre and every class available on every possible time I was able to reschedule swim for Sunday mornings, and dance is now when swim was going to be... at the same time in the same place at dear son's swim... thank goodness it will all work out! and thank you to the holiday season for a slow work day !!! Gave me time to work this all out while at work getting paid :)

Reviews
Haven't done a product review in a long time. I used to love reviewing the new things I bought but really haven't bought anything newsworthy lately until today.
I went to Sephora to look at eyeshadow pallettes. Most of mine are pretty much done and I only have the super dark "night-time" colors left- the ones I hardly ever wear- since i hardly ever go out! I was drawn to the Hello Kitty Noir collection pallette in a collectors tin. It is so cute and there are so many colors to choose from. 25 to be exact! I can't wait to try them all. It also comes with 10 lip glosses. I tried one and it is a very deep color. Quite pink actually, nice but will take a little getting used to! Can't wait to see if the color actually lasts!

sick and sick
So I finally get back to working out. Had 2 or 3 great days and was starting to feel good about the routine...even went skating at lunch one day.. when bam... i am struck with a dumb cold. I know I can still work out a little when I'm not feeling well but I just don't have the energy for it. I'm going to try some of the wacked out cold busting methods some co-workers have shared with me. They might help and they definitely can't hurt. A combo of vitamins c and d .. plus cold fx might just to the trick. For now I'm up at an ung-dly hour just trying to breathe.

My nails
update: over all they are holding up well except for one large chip in my thumb nail. I keep planning to go back to venetian to have it fixed but due to all sorts of reasons just haven't had the chance. The chip happened late Saturday afternoon and all the other nails are still perfect! I will definitely have it done again but won't be going back to Venetian for it. Firstly they don't do an amazing job and secondly, they are fairly pricey. I can get a Shellac mani for much less elsewhere and in the same area!

Nails Take Two
Decided to give Shellac mani a second try. Got one done on Wednesday afternoon a dark brown/redish color. LOVE the color and so far the mani has held up well but I can see a tiny bit of bubbling/texture where I don't think there should be any. Looking forward to seeing how long this will last! The last one I got didn't make it the promised 2 weeks and I ended up peeling it off (and a layer of nail too!)

December Days 3 and 4
Did well on the eating front... more due to a burning I have in my chest every time I eat anything- gotta get that checked out today! Went back to my first Weight Watchers meeting on Saturday for the first time in well over a year. It was great to get back to it-although I"m not %100 convinced I loved this leader. My old one was amazing but it is just too hard to get to meetings during the week and Saturday mornings are way more convenient. SO I will stick with this one and see how it goes! Didn't work out over the weekend, I truely planned on it but honestly this feeling like my lungs are punched in every time I eat or take a breath put a major damper on those plans. I am going to see my doctor today (or any doctor for that matter) and have this problem resolved so I can get back to the working out challenged I posed on myself.

December Day 2
Did alright all day with the healthy eating plan...until dinner time. Hubby came home with his weekly store bought roast chicken and latkes and i resisted those yummy latkes for almost the whole meal...when my resistance wore thin and I tried one bite...which turned to two and suddenly the whole giant fried potato pancake was all gone. but it wasn't all that bad because I did keep my chicken down to 3 ounces and didn't have anything else...except one piece of challa. and since I was in bed by 9:30 I didn't have time to eat any other junk...
Today is a new day and so far I have been doing great!

December Day 1
Kept fairly well to the eating healthy plan. Ate all my vegetables and dairy servings. Did jump on the elliptical for 30 minutes and took the stairs several times today.

Last day till the last month
of the year. December first is tomorrow and it's time to start thinking about New Year's Resolutions once again. Two years ago I resolved to lose the "baby weight" and I did it. That was a serious challenge but I kept at it and obtained my goal. I had some deep rooted motivation and now almost 2 years later I am going to resolve to keep up the healthy eating habits I gained while on my weight loss journey. I am also going to resolve to get more active again. I know how to eat healthily and now I must learn how to incorporate activity into my lifestyle as well. I have all the tools and knowledge but need the deep rooted motivation to filter into this part of my brain! I need to focus on the positive energy working out more will give me. I am digging deep inside me to figure out what exercise I love best and plan to stick to it.
December is my month of personal challenge, to figure out how to incorporate activity into my life, to find a routine and schedule that works for me. I plan to try out some new classes at the community centre, revisit my love of Zumba and perhaps give yoga another try (so many people love it- maybe I will find the type that I love too)
I will keep you posted on my journey of self discovery over the next few weeks and hope that I find something to truly move me

Update on "Party Cool"
So it turns out party cool is just another word for "dressy" Everyone showed up at the bat mitvah in suits, fancy dresses and loads of bling. (except for one of the bat mitvah girls friends-who showed up in jeans, sweater and pumas -boy did she look uncomfortable!) I am certainly glad I wore a little black dress and not a skirt and top or dress pants as I had originally thought I might!
Next event I throw that requires an explanation of dress code will simply say Fancy but NOT formal. Or perhaps something like "cocktail party attire" that sure would have helped clarify what to wear to this event!

WWYD...
if you were handed a cheque for $6000???
Would you spend it on yourself? Go on a shopping spree at your favourite store??
Would you use it to pay off a loan? Line of credit?
Would you purchase new appliances for your home? or play it safe and put it away for a rainy day???
Oh the possibilities!

Party Cool???
We were recently invited to a Bat Mitvah. The invite states that the dress code is "party cool" now really WTF does that mean? A few years ago we were invited to another family function at the dress code on the invite said "elegant casual"... seriously! Now I know for sure that hubby will be wearing a suit- no need to make the same mistake twice but I have no idea what I'm going to wear! I have a great dress I'd love to wear but I wore it to a wedding last year and think it might be too dressy... and the sweater dress I recently bought will probably be too casual...so i guess a shopping trip is in order! Any suggestions on what to wear when the invite says "party cool" that is really a totally new one to me!
(and really, what is with the new dress code lingo all about- just say what you mean so people actually understand what is going on!!!! )

Today I commit to...
starting all over again.
I am promising myself that today I will get back onto the healthy eating and exercising track.
I will make better choices, in both my eating and behaviour.
I will think before I act. I will look to the future before reacting in the now.

before and reality!
I find it amazing that what we think we might do before hand is often not what we end up doing at all! I never imagined being that mom. The one who got annoyed by my kids, freaked out at them and yelled at them all the time. The mom I used give dirty looks to when i was a teenager working at the grocery store. Time to learn how to deal with tantrums and kid fits without raising my voice and feeding the fire!!
Yom Kippur
The Day of Atonement, when you ask G-d to forgive you for all the sins you have committed over the past year. The day when you give up all pleasures and fast without food or water for 24 hours... the day I have always dreaded all year.
This year I am hosting the "break the fast" meal at my home, which means that I must spend most of the day cooking and cleaning my home while not eating a bite and taking care of my 2 little ones (my hubby will be at shul for more of the day than me so I'm primarily responsible for the care of the beasts)! This shall be interesting.
I am making a "simple dairy" meal which consists of nothing containing meat. The only problem is simple doesn't = easy! I still have to make a kugel or two, prepare soup, make home-made vegi pizza and a broccoli braid (using tuna instead of chicken)...then there is the cleaning! oy vey.
My last minute attempt at hiring my cleaning lady to help out didn't pan out-she of course was booked months ago for the night- what on earth was I thinking leaving it to the last minute!!!
Maybe now is a good time to start meditation and serenity now techniques!!

the Lazy Train
was coming... choo choo... I just haven't been up for posting, cooking, exercising or doing much these days. I don't what came over me through most of August and the first part of September but whatever it was I think it is passing.
After becoming so lazy and not exercising much, eating pretty much whatever I wanted and starting to feel like a blimp again my dear hubby decided to give me a much needed kick in the ass. He told me that I had to stop complaining and just do something about how I was feeling. I was annoyed with him at first but then really heard what he said and got right back on that elliptical. I have been working out every other day for about a week now and miraculously feel slimmer already! I only do a 30 minute workout but I adjust the settings myself using the manual mode rather than a set course which is much more challenging- I actually break a sweat- something I never usually did on the elliptical at home (probably part of the reason I gained a shit load of weight in the first place- going from a hard core workout at the gym every day to a half-assed workout at home over the course of several years was not good for my waistline! ) ANYWHOO... I feel like I'm back and going to be giving it my all again.
Next step- attending my motivational meeting again!

still at it
keeping up with healthy habits. Took a mini-break but got back on the elliptical tonight and it felt great. I know now that if i miss a few days it doesn't mean that is the end of it- it just means it's time to start over again!!

Day 26
Got distracted with life and haven't had a chance to blog...or exercise that much for that matter!
Did start an ab work out on Sunday evening which came with a balance ball and resistance band set...it was so hard I had to turn it off after a few minutes- that was a major blow to my ego! BUT on the other hand it was a harsh reminder that I must work on my core strength. Will get to that soon!
Last night I managed to get out for a short run. It was the perfect weather for running. Nice and cool with some breezes too. My only problem still seems to be those iPod earphones which always fall out of my ears while running. I have been meaning to go and get over the head headphones but just haven't had a chance (well i went to bestbuy and for $50 a pair i decided to leave them in the store and will try somewhere else)
As for eating well...haven't been keeping to the WW program that well but haven't gone completely over board eating crap either- just a few too many handfuls of cereal in the evenings and not weighing/measuring portions that well- and of course I had to eat a huge piece the cake my little man made at a cooking party the other day- it was delicious! Will get back on track and will probably do okay at my next weigh-in- so that is all that matters with that right now!

Monday Madness
Had a follow up doctor's appointment yesterday. She has found nothing and really no reason for the ongoing dizziness. I'll stick to the theory that my blood pressure is a little low but it's not overly serious and certainly no excuse to eat like a glutten!
Was supposed to have a new cleaning lady come yesterday. She never showed up! I was quite annoyed as I have doing most of the cleaning myself these days but it is very hard for me to keep up and the house is starting to look a little worse for wear. When I discovered this one for $8 an hour I thought my troubles had been answered but I guess the old saying "if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is" holds true in this case! She had made promises of helping with laundry and cooking too! Oh well. Guess Craigslist is not the most reliable place to find a good cleaning service! IF ANYONE OUT THERE KNOWS OF OR HAS A RELIABLE CLEANING LADY PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!
On the exercise front...managed to get out and run for just under 3km yesterday evening. It was so hot I almost passed out but I did it! If felt great but today my leg muscles are quite sore! I wonder if I'll ever be able to get past 3km in one session...

Feeding Frenzie
Yesterday was not a good day on the eating front. Since I've been suffering dizzy spells lately, the doctor said I have low blood pressure and should make sure to eat frequently throughout the day. I took this a little too much to heart and was eating the whole day...to the point where I really didn't feel that great.
SOOO last night I decided to get my shoes on and run. I planned to run for as long as I could but my run was interrupted by the sight of police helicopters and police cars all over the neighborhood. I was close the end of my run when this disturbing sight caught my attention. Alls well that ends well though...the apparent abduction of a 13 year old boy was not an abduction at all but an angry dad and son dispute (thank goodness!!!)
Back to my point though...did run and felt good about it but muscles are quite sore today. Forgot to track how long I ran (distance and time were lost in all the commotion). Didn't exercise for most of the week but I'm hoping to get back into it again this weekend!

Magical Garden
Our garden is doing really well. So far we have ONE cucumber. It looks like a pickle- it is small and bumpy but will likely grow to a nice size soon. It's so exciting to watch the natural growth of things!
The tomato plant is flowering nicely too. I can imagine that in a few weeks all those flowers are going to be nice juicy tomatoes for my daily salad!! Yummm...

New Week, time to get moving!
Haven't felt like posting much over the weekend. Was so busy with the kids and family stuff that I am finally getting to it!
Had a less-than-successful garage sale yesterday. We put up signs all over the neighborhood and had quite a few people drive by...and not stop! All in all the kids had a great time, we spent time together as a family and I did manage to reorganize some of our stuff as for making money...not so much! Can get less than a tank of gas with our profits but it was an experience over-all!
Later in the day we took the kids to Thornhill Pool for some family swim time. The kids had a blast and loved playing in the water. It is amazing what water-wings will do to a kids' confidence in the water! THEN we went out for my dad's birthday to Southern Rub Smokehouse. Where we had a nice meaty dinner- definitely NOT the place for vegetarians ...the brisket was delicious smothered in smoked molasses sauce! The BBQ chicken looked yummy too!
As for my diet and exercise plan...well stuck to it over all except for dinner last night and the pizza with a side of chips I had at a birthday party today. Balanced it all out with a 3km run this evening. I was doing so well on my run until the last few yards, when the heat and humidity suddenly got to me and I had to slow down to a walk...but that was okay as I got to my goal- running with no walking (except for taking a moment to shove those ipod ear buds back into my ears as they kept falling out!- must find ones that stay in better- or go old school and get ones that go over my head like ear muffs!) I have to say, once i got going it felt pretty good to get out there!

I deserve a huge whoot whoo...
Since my last weigh in on June 4th I have managed to lose 4 pounds. I was really upset last time as I was way too close to my goal weight on paper (and way more than my personal goal weight) so I have been making an effort to stick to plan, exercise daily and just live a healthy lifestyle. All my hard work has been paying off!!! I am now at 135 and am now focusing on maintaining this weight rather than losing more!!! Cross my fingers I can stick to my plan!!!

Day 6..
and still going strong. No serious workout for me yesterday but did take a nice long walk before and after a ginormous sushi dinner. Tried to stick to healthy eating during the day in anticipation of AYCE sushi but got so hungry I snacked on a small piece of 4 cheese pizza before dinner. It was totally worth it!!
I haven't been to weigh-in in over a month and plan on going tomorrow to see if my small efforts have paid off. I will happy to have stayed the same but will be even happier to see a small loss. My weight creapt up a little over the past few months and I had a reality check at my last weigh-in...came just a little too close to my goal weight and definitely don't want it up that high! ( I set my goal weight about 10 pounds higher than my actually personal goal weight just to avoid ever having to pay for a weigh-in again!!)

On the brighter side
After the doctor's visit yesterday we went for a little retail therapy at Yorkdale. I have been wanting to go there for ages and just never get the chance. It wasn't quite as much fun toting a 5 year old boy and a 65+ mother with me as it would have been solo or with a friend but managed to look in a few stores. While browsing in Laura I noticed their amazing sale on costume jewellery, I have been searching for a necklace without much luck when my little guy pulled one off the rack and asked me to try it on...well it was awesome!!! A long 6 strand silver chain that really looks nice with just about everything!!! My 5 year old son is a mini- fashionista! he often picks out clothes for me and they often look good! Funny thing is he picks the funniest outfits for himself and would never let us tell him to change or that he may not match! oh well- I am wearing my new necklace today with such pride!
Day Five and staying alive
This post is more about my visit with an orthopedic surgeon and less about my eating and exercise plan. Although I didn't get to work out yesterday I did stick to my eating well plan. I even took a healthy lunch with me down to Sick Kids hospital as I knew my son and I would likely be in for a long long day. It was a very long day.
We finally got down to the hospital after battling parking at the subway. I had decided to park at Yorkdale in order to avoid major traffic headaches. I didn't know the parking lot only opens at 9:30! Luckily they do start to open the gates a little earlier so we got in the lot at 9:15- but that meant we were still running late. Our appointment time was 10am. Although we did get down for 10 we didn't see the doctor till closer to 1pm! Can you imagine...they signed us in, sent us for x-rays then put us in a quite depressing room for close to 2 hours to wait to see a doctor! This is with an appointment! Anyway the first doctor came to do an assessment and determined that yes he definitely has scoliosis. He then told us the most likely option is surgery. Okay I was completely freaking out inside. This is pretty major. So finally the Orthopedic Surgeon arrived to confirm he has scoliosis but it may be corrected with a brace. So we are taking him back to sick kids in a few weeks for measuring and casting of a brace that he will have to wear for 23 hours a day. I had thought he'd only need to wear it at night but unfortunately I was quite wrong. My little guy is really worried about wearing this brace thing. And I don't blame him!

Day 4
was a great success. Not only did I track every single thing I ate but I also ate very healthy meals, no nutrition less snacks and got in all my water, vegetables and milks! Then I also did a great dance step video which I really enjoyed. The steps were a little less complex then the last step video I tried and I worked up more of a sweat because I could actually do the moves instead of trying to figure out how to do them. And when my footing did get mixed up I just stayed at the basic step just to keep moving. It was pretty awesome. And it was only 25 minutes which I really really loved!!!
I am finding that the more exercise I do the more energy I actually have. I always knew that was the case but sometimes it's so hard to actually put that knowledge into practice!

Day three
Didn't do as well Sunday on the exercise front as I'd hoped but I did still manage to get in some crunches and ab work. Ate pretty well too. My little guy is now encouraging me and wants to know exactly what kind of exercise I've done the night before. I explained to him all about my personal challenge and he thought it was a great idea. I think they've been teaching him about the importance of physical activity at school and we also discussed it with his doctor at his last check up. It is so important to start a love to activity early on in life- i never had that and hope to change that for my kids!

still going
Day two of my personal challenge.
Kept to my eating fairly well. Probably didn't drink all my water and possibly didn't get as many vegetables in as I should but no serious indulgances- except for a handful of smarties while watching Hall Pass with hubby last night.
Did another dusty video. Step and Sweat...it was pretty good but the foot work was more advanced than i'm used to and I got kind of mixed up quite a lot through it.Will try it again- once I get through all the videos one by one!

Starting Over...again
The first of the month has come and gone...I have decided once again to start over. This time I am doing a personal challenge and hope to stick to it full and complete.
I started with yesterday, kept very close to my good eating habits, and only indulged in a few chips with guacamole at the Canada Day BBQ we attended. Definitely didn't go over board- even resisted the gelato and cake everyone was raving about. Then once I got home and kids were in bed I pulled out my box of dusty exercise videos and did a short but effective yoga for beginners. It was only 20 minutes but was enough for me to get back into the groove.

The Garden update
The vegetable garden is coming along nicely. I fed the plants with organic plant food, specifically made for vegetable growth. I wonder if it makes a difference. So far I see lots of flowering on both the tomato and cucumber plants, i assume those flowers will eventually turn to vegetables. I can hope anyway!!!
Hopefully pics will come soon!

My experiment
with vegetable gardening...
Over the weekend my son and I planted some tomatoes and cucumbers. I am so curious to see what will come of this. We (okay I) have never had success with vegetable gardening in the past. Each time I plant tomatoes I forget about them and they really do need attention and TLC in order to produce any fruit. SOO this year I am trying to remember that they need to be watered daily (actually we've been lucky so far in that the rain has been doing this for me!!!) and the also need to be fed- so i'm giving some plant/vegetable food and crossing my fingers for decent results!!! I have no idea what to expect of the cucumbers but for the $3.99 it cost to buy the plant already blooming I figured I'd try! Since I eat 1 whole cucumber a day this will really help with the grocery bills if I do see results!!!
Any tips from any gardeners out there???

My nails...updated
Well one week after my nails were done I had my first little tiny chip. I was a bit dissapointed as this gel was supposed to last at least two weeks and they weren't supposed to chip, only grow out. Two days after the first tiny chip I now have some major breakage and one whole nail has come off.
I won't be returning to Venetian for the gel manicure again. I do like their regular mani/pedis and will stick to that for a special occassion.
Although, after talking to some of my collegues I discovered that gel manicures are actually different than shellac and I am willing the actual Shellac mani at a different salon.

Something New
I have been hearing about the new Shellac/gel manicures for months now. I really wanted to try it as my nails are usually a huge mess. Finally this week when I had some time I took the plunge to get this done. I am really impressed so far. It's been 2 days since I got them done and there is absolutely no sign of chipping. They look just as perfect now as they did when I left the salon!
There are fewer colors to choose from but since I had decided on a french anyway it really didn't matter to me!
This manicure does cost a lot more than a traditional one but if it truely lasts 14 days than it is well worth the extra $$!(I paid about $40 with tax and tip) I may just have found my solution to awful nails.

June 1st, new month, new goals
I have found myself going back to some of my old (bad) habits lately. It is so easy to slip back to being a couch potato and not exercise, eat crap and (pretend to) not care about it at all. Deep down I know I love exercising and when I get off my arse and actually do it I feel great about it. So since I have a day off work and nowhere to be till 10 am I am going to take this opportunity to Just Do It and head out for a run.
I was apprehensive about running because my toes/feet always go numb when I walk/run but after talking to my chiropractor about it she suggested taping my feet with athletic tape so that is what I've been doing and amazingly she knows what she is talking about-it has actually been helping. The problem wasn't what I thought it was but a symptom of dropped arches. My feet are pretty much completely flat and that is what has been causing me all this pain! SO once I get fitted for orthotics and wear them regularly I can run to my heart content without pain (I hope) for now I'm off for a run tape in hand on feet.
I'll let ya'll know how it fairs!
POST RUN UPDATE
It is a hot one today and I was really really fighting to run and not walk. I did have to stop and tie my shoelace near the end and walked a bit then. I managed to run almost 3km and did it in 25 minutes. I think if the ear buds from the ipod would stop falling out of my ears and it wasn't so hot out I could have gone a little bit longer and made it to a full 3km today. I'll try again 2 days from now (don't want to push it right away)
I have been thinking about running in the mornings since I'm up at 6am with the kids anyway but doubt that would actually work. They are up and therefore they need me around at that hour...can't just up and run-then come home to get ready afterwards. I will just have to take morning runs on the days I'm home and they are not! otherwise evenings it will have to be! I'm just glad I finally did it!

Amazing
how much I love my house when I get the chance to actually clean it!!! When it is a messy, disgusting pit I hate my house but when I've had the chance to clean and polish the sofas, tables and windows I actually love this house!! I never realized how much a clean house can affect ones mood and general outlook on life! Now if only I could keep the cleaning up and not have to do "power clean sessions" as I call them (taking the day off work to clean the house from top to bottom!)
I've tried following Fly Lady and The Happy Slob's Guide to house cleaning but after a few days I always seem to revert back to my old habits- although MAYBE if I lived alone and followed these sites full of great advice, I'd be able to keep it up but living as one in a family of four when not everyone is on board with keeping up the clean makes it hard.
For those clean/neat freaks out there- how do you do it? Secrets please!!!

Mother's Day Updated
Mother's Day was for the most part a nice day. Hubby made yummy scrambled eggs- he makes them so well- for some reason that is one thing I just cannot get right! My kiddies and Hubby got me a mani/pedi gift certificate. He even booked it for me so I won't delay going! I took my girl to playfun and had a really nice time with her. She made me a cute bead necklace to go along with the beautiful bracelet she made me at daycare!!
My boy and I went for nice walk around the neighborhood dropping off birthday party invitations in the afternoon while my girl napped (for 3 whole hours!!!) On our walk we stopped and chatted with a neighbor whose son is in his class and we even had a short play session with another classmate whose mom invited us in for a bit! I am finally starting to feel that we are part of a community rather than living on a street with neighbors I don't know!
Later in the day after my girl woke we went to the Thornhill Woods park where the kids ran around and played with their cousin while we parents chased them around with sunscreen hats. (to no avail though-i'm planning to buy the sunscreen that just sprays and doesn't need to rub in-that way I can just get them and it's done with!) We even ran into a friend or two whom we haven't seen in so long- really great to catch up with them too ;)
Afterwards we went to my brother's house and had a nice take out dinner from Sofra (although next time we order from there I think we'll need to get another meal because the meals seem to be a little small and getting 4 dishes for 6 adults and 3 kids really is never enough) The whole family enjoyed a nice day all in all and the kids were so worn out by bath/bed time that they were fast asleep by 8pm (a little later than normal but for a nice reason so it was okay!)

Mother's Day
is coming soon. The past few years I have suggested hosting a pot luck brunch for my family and hubby's family. Restaurants are just too crazy busy and it's not really enjoyable with so many little ones to look after. My suggestions have been shot down time and time again so this year I have decided that i'm not going to bother making the suggestion and just spend mother's day with my hubby and my 2 babies (who are growing so quickly- they are hardly babies anymore!!)
Now the big question is...what to do with them that won't have me all stressed out and cursing! They are great kids and I love spending my time with them- individually but when they are together they just run me totally ragged!
A few places we've thought of going
1. the zoo. We LOVE the zoo. for the past few years we have had passes which allow us unlimited visits and we have gone many many times over the summer but I didn't renew our pass this year for financial reasons- we'll have to see if we change our minds and get one again this.
2. Fantasy Fair. I've never been there but there was recently a Groupon deal online that I just couldn't resist. $20 for a family of 4. I've heard how much fun this place is I thought it would a nice treat for the kids to go somewhere different. It's indoors so it is a great option for a rainy day!
3. Canada's Wonderland. We bought season's passes this year. Sunday is opening day so it might just BE a zoo there but we'll have to see what our mood is like before we commit to going there this weekend. Also depends on what the weather is like,
4. the local park. There is an awesome new park in Thornhill Woods that we took the kids to last weekend. They absolutely loved it. I loved it too. There is NO SAND at this park and there are structures there for kids of all ages. It was crazy busy and I suspect it is always like that- people come from all over the place to play at this park! Either way the kids had a great time running around, we got to enjoy the fresh air and chat with new people while the kids played. It was great!
I guess we'll have to see what the days brings!
Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful moms out there!!

Locks of Love
I have been growing my hair for a while now. I've had it trimmed a couple of time over the last year but decided I wanted to grow it really long. Well in the past while I started thinking that I'd actually do something nice with my hair once it grows well past my shoulders (and thought if I was bothered about my hair being too long I would have a great excuse) I am going to grow my hair for Lock of Love and donate it once it gets long enough. I am so excited to have a good cause to give to and look really forward to when my hair does grow long enough to donate!

weather woes
I am really getting depressed over this terribly cold weather. Spring came and spring went...all in a week. Now we're back to winter and it is getting to me. I hate having to bundle the kids up, look for their hats and mittens and run around like a maniac chasing them with warm sweaters.
The kids are getting tired of playing inside too. I"m not one of those parents who says " if they bundle up and dress right, they can play outside" I'm more like, if it's under 10 degrees it's too cold to go outside!
Where is the nice spring weather we are supposed to have this time of year? Please g-d give us a break and bring it on, tell Mother Nature that we will soon lose faith if she doesn't wake up soon!
