chag sameach

My favourite holiday of the Jewish year is here. Passover is always my favourite time of year. Spring is in the air, we have an excuse not to eat bread, family gets together for a wonderful meal (or two) and of course my birthday is around this time of year as well...
This year I am hosting the 2nd sedar (feast) For tonight's menu we have
Chicken soup (made by my MIL)
Matzah balls (made by my dad)
Orange and fennel salad (made by my mom)
Sweet and sour meatballs (by moi)
Chicken with peppers (by moi)
Garlic mashed potatoes (by moi)
Potato kugel
Carrot Tzimmis
Apple kugel
Lemon chiffon
fruit salad

  2. it's easy when others help you by making lots of the food!! I couldn't have done everything myself AND look after Elie-it's bad enough he spent most of yesterday watching TV so i could cook :(

  3. Wow, Dina! That is impressive to host a Seder! Have a lovely time with your family :) I think it's so wonderful for Elie to experience this! Ohhhhh...and your dad does make the best Matzah balls and the best potato latkes! I will never forget the Seder dinner that you and your dad and brother included us in. It was special. I had been invited to quite a few seders in the past, but in some cases, felt very awkward since I'm not Jewish...and I totally understand and respect that...and in other special holiday situations (with other friends' families), I felt welcomed, included, and like my friends' families just wanted to share with me some of the most important parts of their beliefs, religion, culture and lifestyle. It's always nice to be able to learn and be part of something so special.

    Please say hello to your parents for me :) You are quite the hostess, D! The menu sounds fab!

    CK- a kugel just means a pudding and a tzimmis is a mixture of foods...as for the desserts- dont' get too excited because if you've ever tasted matza you'd know that there isn't much you can do to make it taste right
    Chrissy- my dad has lost his touch with the matza balls, they were more like golf balls this year :(

  8. Oh really? Say it ain't so!! I actually really LOVED the matza balls your dad made that time! Oh dear...why am I all of a sudden craving latkes? Ohhhhhhh and knishes (sp?)!!! Oh, and blintzes too! Darn it...where can I get a good knish on the Island??? :(

    Did I tell you that in grade 5 we learned how to make Challah??? It was actually part of religion class. For some reason, that experience has always stuck with me.

  9. matza balls can be hit or miss- it is rumoured that you must stir the batter a certain number of times to make them fluffy and leave them sit for a certain amount of time...who knows...i haven't made them in a long time but may try again in a few days- for now we're eating leftovers as i cooked enough for 25 people not the 10 adults we had!
